A tabletop companion for in-person and hybrid games
Tabletop companion
Phones hold the sheets. The table keeps the story.
Table mode is a second view of the same BestVTT room: the same players, the same characters, the same chat. Each player gets their hero on their phone, with tap-to-roll, hit points, spells and gear. The DM gets a party console on a laptop or tablet. The real table keeps the paper map, the minis and the conversation; phones never show a map.
Log inBestVTT is a private project: accounts are invitation-only and come from your table's host. There are no open signups.
01 / Getting to the table
One link, two views
Table mode lives inside any room you already belong to. There are three ways in:
- The Play at the table button on a game's card in your dashboard, next to Launch.
- The Play at the table tile in the online board's rail menu, which opens table mode in a new tab.
- The DM console's Invite to the table panel, which shows a link and a QR code for the room. Players who are already signed in on their phone go straight to their sheet. Anyone else signs in and joins the room, then uses Play at the table from the dashboard.
The same address works for everyone: the room's DM gets the console, and players get their character sheet.
A player without a hero in the campaign can claim one of the DM's ready-made heroes right on the phone. Forging a brand-new hero happens on a larger screen.
02 / Phone player view
Your hero, one thumb away
The phone view has four tabs along the bottom: Hero, Spells, Pack and Table. Spells only appears for spellcasters. A Disadvantage / Normal / Advantage switch stays in place and applies to every d20 roll until you change it.
- Hero
- Tap a skill, ability check, saving throw, initiative or weapon to roll it. An attack rolls to hit first and then offers damage; a critical hit offers doubled dice. Step hit points by 1, 5 or 10, or use the number pad to take damage, heal or add temporary hit points. The tab also shows AC, speed, initiative, proficiency and passive Perception, the 15 standard conditions plus exhaustion and concentration, inspiration, and death saves at 0 HP. A short rest spends hit dice, which the server rolls; a long rest restores hit points, spell slots and hit dice.
- Spells
- Slot pips for full casters, half casters and Warlock pact magic. Casting spends the slot, including when you upcast, and rolls the attack, the damage (with the save DC in the label) or the healing, with an Apply +N HP button. Concentration is tracked, and a searchable prepare mode picks the day's spells.
- Pack
- Change quantities, edit or drop items, and add your own. Drink or use a consumable, roll its healing and apply it. Track gold. When the DM offers an item, choose Take it or Refuse.
- Table
- The room's chat feed, with the DM's check requests and offers, and a line to speak to the table.
Each roll opens a result sheet that shows advantage and marks natural 20s and natural 1s.
03 / DM console
The whole party on one screen
The DM console is laid out for a laptop or tablet. The top bar counts how many phones are connected. Each hero has a party card showing:
- hit points, which the DM can edit with typed damage or healing and an Undo;
- temporary hit points and AC;
- passive Perception, Investigation and Insight;
- conditions, exhaustion and concentration;
- spell slot pips, read-only;
- inspiration and death saves;
- a presence dot: at the table, on the board, or away.
The action bar works on the heroes you select, or on the whole party if you select none:
- Check
- Ask for a skill check, saving throw, ability check or initiative, with the DC revealed or hidden. Each player gets a request card with a Roll button, and the answers stream into the feed.
- Damage and Heal
- A number pad with a per-hero preview, and one Undo.
- Bestow
- Offer an item, described in your own words, which players can take or refuse.
- Rest
- Run a short rest or a long rest for the party.
- Inspire
- Grant inspiration.
The feed lists the newest events first, with filters and a chat box. Any hero's full sheet opens read-only in a drawer. If the room's chat is turned off, a banner warns that check requests, offers and rolls won't reach the phones.
05 / Table and virtual play
Moving between the table and the board
Table mode and the virtual tabletop are two views of one room, and both can be open at once:
- Players in the room use phones while a remote player joins on the online board, in the same session.
- The DM's presence dots show who is at the table and who is on the board.
- One account can have a board tab and a phone open at the same time.
- From the board, the Play at the table tile opens table mode in a new tab. To go back to the map, return to the dashboard and choose Launch.
- The same character carries over from an in-person week to an online week, with nothing to export or import.
06 / Use cases
How groups use it
- Kitchen-table night
- A paper map, physical minis and a pile of dice on the table. Everyone's sheet is on their phone, so nobody hunts for a pencil to track hit points or spell slots, and the DM sees the whole party's health on the console.
- One seat online
- Four players are in the room and one has moved away. The remote player joins on the online board; the others play on phones. Everyone's rolls appear in the same chat, and the DM sees each player's presence.
- Alternating weeks
- The group meets in person one week and online the next. The heroes, their gear and their spent resources are the same wherever you pick up.
- A one-shot with ready-made heroes
- The DM prepares heroes for the campaign; players sit down, claim one on their phone and start rolling.
- "Everyone, roll Perception"
- The DM selects nobody, chooses Check, picks Perception and hides the DC. Each phone gets a Roll button, and the results arrive in the console's feed without anyone calling out numbers.
07 / Good to know
What it does not do
- It plays D&D 5e rules only.
- There is no map on phones. The map stays on the table, or on the online board.
- The DM console has no initiative tracker; run turn order at the table or on the online board.
- Full sheets need a room created from a campaign. In other rooms, the phone shows only the Hero and Table tabs.
- Each hero needs a token on the room's map; claiming a ready-made hero places one. Each player plays one hero.
- Characters are created on a larger screen, not on a phone.
- Every player needs an account and membership in the room. Accounts are invitation-only.
- Room chat must be turned on for check requests, offers and rolls to reach phones.
- Phones need a connection to stay in sync. While a phone is offline, its rolls are queued and sent once it reconnects, sheet edits pause, and it stops receiving updates. There is no offline mode and nothing to install.
- Attack rolls are not compared with the target's AC for you.
